Recording of Classes

There are several options to record a class or a presentation that you can share with your students, for instance, via Google Drive or OneDrive, giving your students permission to just visualize it. And publish the Google Drive or the  OneDrive link on the Curricular Unit Homepage at Fénix so that all students have access.

The available options are:

  1. Zoom: you can use Zoom as a recording tool (option Record on this computer) so that students can watch it later. Check the website Online Lectures, for complementary information, and the end of this section of how to make the recordings available for your students.
  2. PowerPoint (narrated presentation): open your PowerPoint presentation and activate the Record button in the Slide Show. This will allow you to enter the presentation mode and you can record the presentation and your voice. In order to export your recording like a video presentation, select File>Export and select Create a Video. Check that you have selected “Use Recorded Timings and Narrations” and choose .mp4 format.
  3. Keynote (narrated presentation): in the Play menu of Keynote, select Record Slideshow; you will enter into presentation mode, and the recording menu will become visible. Before you start recording, check your microphone is working properly. To export your recording, select the video format and File>Export>Video.
  4. To make the videos available to students there are several options. After recording, although it is possible to upload the videos to the Fenix System, the use of this option is strongly discouraged, given that it not only overloads the Fenix system, which was not optimized for this type of use but requires students to a lengthy process of downloading the file for later viewing.
    1. Alternatively, one of the following three options is suggested:
      •  Video storage on the FCCN educast platform

The Educast platform provides a management and distribution service for audiovisual content. Besides uploading to the central server, the platform allows video editing and subsequent publication, ensuring that recordings are available through 3 types of formats: streaming, desktop and mobile. Depending on the selected option, the contents produced are accessible to the public or to the entire University. There are also specific utilities for prior offline recordings of class sessions. After logging into the Educast platform, there are several tutorials with detailed explanations of its features (creating a channel, defining content, editing, etc.).

To use the Educast service, select the option of recording the video on the local computer (or remotely in Cloud, and then download it). You can then upload it to the Educast platform, using the instructions available at the Educast website.
After publishing the video on Educast Platform, through the sharing option you may create a link, and publish the link on the Fenix webpage.

      •  Storage and sharing of a video on Microsoft OneDrive platform

When scheduling a new meeting/session, select the video recording option. After this, the video can be uploaded to Microsoft’s OneDrive storage system (http://onedrive.live.com), through your IST account, which has unlimited space. After you upload the video on to OneDrive, you can get an access link by selecting the file with your right mouse button (select the option all link owners may view). This link may then be published on the corresponding subject on the Fenix webpage.
You must have access to the OneDrive and Office365 subscribed by IST, in order to use the OneDrive institutional account. More information on this process is available at https://si.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/software/microsoft-office-365/.

  •  Storage and sharing of a video on the Google Drive platform.

When scheduling a new meeting/session, select the video recording option. After this, the video can be uploaded to Google Drive storage system (http://onedrive.live.com), through your IST account, which has unlimited space. After you upload the video on to Google Drive, you can get an access link by selecting the file with your right mouse button (select the option all link owners may view). This link may then be published on the corresponding subject on the Fenix webpage.
Please note, if you have a private gmail account, by selecting drive.google.com it is possible that you access to your personal account, which has very limited storage space. When accessing through your IST’s account, the IST’s logo will appear on the upper right corner. If you have both accounts active, you can switch between accounts by using the icon with your account initials on the upper right corner. To activate the Google Drive institutional account, it is necessary to activate IST’s institutional G-suite account. More information about activating the G-suite at https://si.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/servicos/servicos-externos/google-suite-for-education/.
