Google Classroom
Characteristics
- It allows only IST registered students in the course (with Google Suite account) and with access to the indicated course code to answer.
- Allows you to define fixed evaluation periods (to the minute).
- Late deliveries cannot be automatically avoided, but it is possible to check the delivery date and time and not take it into account.
- To avoid delayed deliveries, if forms are used, they can be locked so that they will not accept any more answers after the time has expired.
- It generates spreadsheets with the answers and the evaluation. Successive assessments can be integrated into the overall student assessment framework within Google Classroom.
- It allows different types of questions, from the most basic levels of multiple-choice to questions with input of values.
- It supports the inclusion of the assessment questions and answers by PDF, and associates an area in G Suite for each class (associated with IST accounts). Each work and answers (or answer files) are stored in a separate folder inside Google Drive.
- It can be easily used with Google Forms to create quizzes and import grades. The forms do not prevent the student from moving forward and backwards in the sequence of questions, which allows the student to see at a glance all the questions he will have to answer (disadvantage when compared to Socrative).
- It allows private communication with each student and allows a private presentation of the evaluation result.
- It has a public forum for communication between students and teachers that allows for more general questions.
- It has the problem of not importing the IST id if the student, although it does import the email address and the complete name, which makes the inclusion of results in the global evaluation spreadsheet less simple. However, if a form is used, the student number can be a mandatory question for the student to answer, which greatly facilitates the work of assigning grades.
- Revision of PDF files, text files, presentations and spreadsheets can be made on the platform itself and are available for each student to consult. It can facilitate the assessment review.
- Google Forms has the drawback of not allowing the creation of questions database to generate completely random quizzes. However, for classes that are not very large (<70 students), this limitation can be circumvented by creating multiple versions of assessment with different questions and scheduling to be assigned to sets of different students at the same time. It will be the equivalent of creating a version A, B, C, etc., of a written assessment.
Experience of use
- It was used in 2019/2020 in Compilers (180 students), to replace the exercises at the end of each laboratory class (Compilers, LEIC-A).
- It is being used in Energy Services (30 to 40 students) since 2018/2019 to deliver programming work.
- It is being used in Process Synthesis and Integration (80 students) to schedule the delivery of forms and mini-projects.
Exclusive use of Google Forms:
- Evaluation of laboratory work since 2015/2016 in Energy Management (250 students), with answers of numerical entries, text and submission of files.
- Continuous assessment in Process Synthesis and Integration (Chemical Engineering) with 80 students, with multiple choice and numerical entries.

Students with Special Educational Needs
Procedure: when the professor assigns an assessment to a student with special needs, he can create a work that will be assigned only to that student, with a longer time for its delivery. The statement may even be the same as that given to the other students. Thus, there is an independent control over the time allocated for that student.
